The Prediabetic Myth 
 
'Pre-diabetic' is a term frequently bandied about by medical professionals in their efforts to categorize their patients who have elevated blood sugar. They have charted certain numbers as designated levels of diabetes, and somehow or another, some of these levels fall below the level - in their estimation - of actually even being diabetic, but being only 'pre' diabetic. I hope you won't take offense if I tell you their little plan is smoke and mirrors. It is a system that allows doctors to pigeon-hole their patients by degree of illness. But I assure you that if you've been told you're pre-diabetic, you are already ill, already have an incurable metabolic malfunction, and are already sliding down a very slippery slope toward higher more dangerous blood sugar levels which can and will damage your blood vessels. The most vulnerable areas for this damage are your retinas, your kidneys and your extremities (fingers & toes first).  
 
By the time blood sugar gets high enough to register on doctors' radar, it has already been doing its damage to your body for months, if not years. Non-diabetic people run fasting blood sugar levels around 70 and 80 mg/dl, which equates with 3.8 and 4.4 mmol/l. So even if your levels are still under 100 (5.55), you're already inching toward the danger zones. And at this time, diabetes is forever; there is NO CURE.  
 
So if you breathed a sigh of relief at being labeled 'pre-diabetic', thinking you don't yet have diabetes at all, I hope you'll take this as a wake-up call and try to better understand the situation you're in.
What causes blood sugar levels to rise is a dietary component . . . carbohydrate. And diabetes is literally the metabolic inability to process carbohydrate properly. Of the three macronutrients - protein, fat and carbohydrate - only two are essential nutrients. Those two are protein and fat. Carbohydrates are NOT essential nutrients, so you will not become malnourished if you stop eating them. The most common dangerous 'carbs' are grains (corn, wheat, oats, rice, etc), root vegetables (potatoes, beets, carrots, etc) and fruit (apples, oranges, bananas & everything else except for a few berries like raspberries & blueberries). Less dangerous carbs are dark leafy greens, and these can be used either raw or cooked to maintain a full complement of all essential vitamins/minerals required for optimum health.  
 
So when people find themselves in the early stages of diabetes, they are wise to take control of the situation instead of trusting the doctor is right about 'pre' diabetes. Hoping they don't really need to treat their elevated blood sugar at all, is a perilous path to follow. Knowledge is power, and now that it is known that pre-diabetes is a myth, taking measures quickly is the 
best course of action.The first line of defense is to eliminate carbs from meals. The second line of defense is to add lots of fats to meals. While carbs are quick to raise blood sugar, fats have no such properties. Natural saturated and unsaturated plant and animals fats provide excellent nourishment without any effect on blood sugar. So simply replacing carbs with fats is often the only treatment needed to hold diabetes at bay.  
 
You will also hear that diabetes is a progressive disease, and that is another myth, just like pre-diabetes. The management methods prescribed by the medical community often allow progression which leads to complications, but patients who take control and reduce their carb intake while replacing it with fats, will find themselves in the enviable position of stopping the progression and avoiding complications.
