Over the past several years, across forums & blogs, we've heard & read that Metformin is a safe drug which has been around for decades. Not just that, it also helps against cancer.

Well, a team of researchers has now identified the pathway responsible for this beneficiary effects of Metformin. You can read the study here;

Interesting information.  The question I still have is at what dose do the benefits provide this protection ?  It may have been in there somewhere but I didn't see it.  I have been taking Metformin for over 20 years and the only thing I have heard negative is that in some people who have been taking it for a long time it could cause Vitamin b12 to be too low.  I had my b12 level tested and I am on the high side of the normal range do apparently that is not a problem but it is a good thing for people who have been taking Met for several years to test for to be sure.  There may also be other benefits for Metformin also so I am not going to stop taking it.

Me either, Wally . . . I've been taking the maximum dose of met ER which is 2000mg daily. I think it's beneficial even now that I'm on insulin - maybe more so - because its job is to help the cells accept the insulin, and now there's actually insulin there to help!

I've been taking 1500 mg of Metformin ER since diagnosis back in 2003.  At first I didn't think it was helping me much, but then I quit it for several weeks.  I found out in a big hurry just how much it does help with insulin resistance and I resumed taking it.  It was one of the hardest meds to become used to however as the gastro issues were absolutely horrible in the beginning.

These experiments were carried out on isolated cells in the labs. Until there are some human trials it will be difficult to gauge the best dosage. For now I think we can assume that the optimum dosage for each individual based on his/her weight is the best bet.

I take 500 mg x 2 daily. Was toying with the idea of giving up since I've been consistent with my low 90s fro some time, but I don't think I will.

I would call that a wise decision, Rocky . . . unless you're suffering side effects from met, it seems like it's what helped you get to where you are, and it is prob'ly helping you stay where you are.

Thanks Shanny. No, I don't have any side effects and I'm quite happy to continue with the current dose. Doctor also feels I should continue.

I was started on the lowest dose of Metformin extended release when I was first diagnosed, and even with that, I did have some digestive issues.  I think my body has pretty much adjusted to the Metformin and I'm still on the same dose.
