Alcohol ?
« on: March 12, 2016, 06:56:52 PM »
So here's the oft repeated question ?

What is your favourite drink ? And how much do you drink ?

Myself - Vodka drinker. 30 ml every evening with 15 ml tonic water + soda water & ice.

What about you ?

I don't drink very often, but I really enjoy a margarita once in awhile, and I'm fond of gin & tonic too. Even without the gin, I enjoy diet tonic water on ice.

Liqueurs and beer are too spiky, alas.

Red wine is beloved by diabetics.  Less sugar than white wines, and red wines may reduce a spike (or not).

Unfortunately, I sometimes have a mild allergic reaction to red wine (but I indulge moderately, anyway).  Mostly, I turn to scotch-and-soda, or vodka-and-soda with a splash of lime juice.

I used to like gin-and-tonic, too, but haven't tried diet tonic water yet.

I drink 1-2 scotch and soda's every evening before dinner.  And sometimes I may even have a glass of red wine with dinner, depending on what's for dinner.

If we go out for Mexican style food, or to some other restaurant, I will have one Micalobe Ultra Beer (Very low carb) or a glass of red wine.

None to this shows up on my BS.  I have checked numerous time going out 3-4 hours to be sure....

Any more than this would be ridiculous for me.....

Sometimes I'll have a glass or two of wine with dinner, occasionally a Michelob Ultra.  Most nights I'll have a shot or two of either whiskey/rum/brandy/vodka late in the evening.  I drink tonic water throughout the day, sometimes I drop a frozen strawberry in it and call it "fruit juice".  :)  I like an occasional gin tonic too.

I should add that I make my margaritas with Fresca. Any good lemon/lime/grapefruit mixer will work as long as it's sugar/free.

I drink white wine (Chardonnay) or a bit of Vodka with water, ice and a squeeze of lemon when at home  and I'm in the mood.  Out, I order white wine or vodka on the rocks with a twist of lemon or lime.  I find that it has no effect or lowers my BG a bit. Fortunately, I have no sweet tooth for the fruitier drinks unless on a cruise!   ;)

Isn't alcohol supposed to be bad for blood sugar. That is what we were given to understand by the Dr

Our "Doctor" also tell us to keep our A1C above 6.0 and to eat 100 carbs or more a day!
The only true way to tell if drinking or eating something is harmful for diabetic is test with your meter....

I have and my meter tells me what I drink does not impact my BS.....

Now, that is not to say that excessive drinking is good for diabetics or anyone for that matter, but that is a completely different discussion

Alcohol is toxic and takes metabolic priority when consumed. As a result other nutritive elements get bypassed. That results in BG actually dropping. That said, as a toxin, excessive alcohol intake is not advisable as timewise said. Some toxins the body can tolerate, and it is important to know that balance. How much is excessive, is again a YMMV question, though general worldwide expert opinions put that figure at 45 ml/day.
