Best time for Metformin
« on: September 11, 2017, 08:04:07 PM »
I was taking 2 metformin pills for some time, which I subsequently reduced to 1 pill everyday. This was after consulting with you guys. For a couple of months I was taking the pill in the morning. For the past few days I forgot to take it in the morning and have switched over to taking it in the evening. Would that help with the morning fasting number. I've found my number to go down a few points. Just a couple of points. I thought I'd ask the experts.

It's certainly possible. I take my Lantus about 9pm, and then I take my metformin when I go to bed, prob'ly 3-4 hours later. Maybe I should switch around a bit & see what happens.

I don't take metformin so I don't have any first hand knowledge about that, but I suppose that the timing could make a dent in the numbers as you have observed. Keep a close watch on the fasting numbers and let's see if the advantage continues over a longer duration or fizzles out in some time.

I take Metformin extended release which is easier on my stomach.  I take 500 mg three times a day and I've experimented a bit when I take it.  For me it doesn't seem to make any difference when I take it.  It does however make a difference if I don't take it at all as it seems to help with insulin resistance which I do have also.

I have been taking Metformin for over 20 years and I also have reduced my dosage from twice a day to once a day.  I also wondered about the best time to take it but I don't see any difference.  One thing is that Metformin is not fast acting like the drugs that cause the pancreas to squeeze out insulin and it takes time for it to take effect.  Some may have different experiences but for me even missing a day does not change anything and morning or night does not seem to matter.

Thanks for all the replies. I knew I could count on you guys for some meaningful inputs. I'm going to continue taking it in the evening for a few days and will observe my morning numbers to see if it makes any difference to me. Will report back in a few days.
