Family Dr failed to diagnose DKA
« on: March 24, 2016, 08:26:00 PM »
Some years ago, a 17 year old girl died in Scotland due to DKA. Her family physician, and another consulting doctor failed to recognize the symptoms and continued treating her for constipation ?

Truly this is such a sad thing to happen to the family. I wish doctors were more diligent in their duty.

There does seem to be a widespread reluctance to test for diabetes (let alone get the Type right), when it should be a standard part of every routine blood test battery.

It does indeed . . . and without much effort, either. Which doesn't speak well for their medical disciplinary boards; not even a slap on the wrist?!  >:(

I've noticed that the standard blood tests for ketones may show only moderate amounts even in full-blown DKA which means most modern docs won't treat it.

Who would know the first time around to insist on a GAD 65 antibody test?

People die from this kind of thing...
