Interesting, SKB.

Normally, glucagon is an intra-muscular injection given by a care giver when a type 1 has passed out from a hypo. IMs are somewhat painful and the injection is difficult to administer with some mixing involved of the drug; it’s something of a last resort and requires some aftercare as it causes liver depletion of glucose.

This could be a great part of a child’s emergency kit and I’ll be curious to follow the progress of it.

I would hope this comes to the U.S. as I would much prefer a spray than an injection that has to be mixed and causes nausea as a side effect.

I can see this as a much preferred method over injections for all T-1's.

Insulin & Glucagon are both hormones secreted by the pancreas. Glucagon is secreted by the alpha cells. They have contradictory & opposing actions. The one bit that is confusing (to me) is, that insulin’s actions are ;

1 Deliver Glucose for cell uptake
2 Encourage glucose conversion to glycogen & storage in the liver
3 Encourage Glucose conversion to triglycerides & storage in fat cells

So Glucagon would definitely help in reversal of 2 & 3 above. How would it help if 1 is reversed in a hypo.

SKB, I’m not sure if the drug “Glucagon” is the actual hormone. I expect (but don’t know) that they differ in respects.

It is the same.

I can understand trying to raise the glucose levels in the blood serum to counter the hypo, but the glucose also needs to be delivered into cells whereby the injected insulin will also get depleted.

The article mentions that the participants in the study recovered on average within 30 minutes after taking the spray.  I wonder if the brain is the 'target' for the glucagon itself?  When I have a severe low my ability to concentrate clearly is also severely impaired as is my vision.  The brain is hungry for sugar at that point.
