Compounding this problem, numbers of endocrinologists, the physicians who specialize in treating diabetes, are dwindling as the older generation retires with fewer new physicians filling the ranks. This means the burden of care has fallen on primary care physicians, who treat 82 percent of diabetic patients.

The only diabetologist that ever set up practice in our town was the most arrogant, abrasive individual I ever saw for my diabetes.  He said he would 'allow' me 1 test strip per day even though I have T1 diabetes.  He told me to get the weight off or he didn't ever want to see me in his office again.  I left his office, with my husband, and never returned.

On the other hand the first Endocrinologist I ever saw was the kindest man I ever saw.  He is also the one who potentially diagnosed me with sleep apnea and strongly suggested I see a sleep doctor which I did.  I owe the Endocrinologist a lot of gratitude.  Sadly he has since retired.

I think that there should be a requirement that a doctor certified as a diabetologist is a diabetic.

A great idea, Wally.

Actually, in this region we’ve seen something of of an explosion of APRNs replacing MDs in a few different specialities including diabetes. Unlike Grammabear’s unfortunate experience, they’re often more approachable than MDs and frequently quite knowledgeable.

Sadly, it’s the so-called diabetes educators who’re disseminating terrible advice seemingly universally.

Unfortunately I think that a CDE is required to follow the ADA program and I think that a diabetologist would also have that requirement.
