Here's a study which suggests that untreated diabetes increases the risk of Alzheimer's 1.6 times.

I have lots of Alzheimers in my family history. More than I want to even think about. I am even considering asking my primary about going back on Metformin for it's supposed protection. I am in fairly good control now, given the medical oopses that are fooling with my bg, but that one bit of protection might give me  a bit of comfort.

I'm thinking of starting low dose metformin myself, considering that my diet control is far too lacking the past few months.

I have no Alzheimer's in my family history but still look out for it.  I have been taking Metformin for several years.  I used to take 2000 mg of the regular and never had a problem with it.  My doctor wanted me to try a lower dose so I went to 1000 mg a couple of years ago and it seems fine.  It does have some other benefits that are suspected but not proven.

I've started with low dose 250mg x 2 metformin on the 8th this month. Maybe I'll build up from there, maybe not. Numbers will tell.

I don't see my PCP until mid June, but I am going to ask him then to go back on it too. I have slipped up some on my diet so do expect my A1c to be up some so that may help my case.
